Famous potheads

There’s really no doubt about it: marijuana is an indelible part of American society. As such, it has spawned an endless line of potheads.

While a good many of these potheads are average, everyday individuals, others of these potheads are icons, having stamped their unique brand of stoner-ism on the pop culture history books.

Curious as to who these potheads are? Then read on! We’re going to discuss the best famous potheads of all time.

The Most Famous Potheads

Of the following stoners, some are real individuals and some are fictional characters. However, they all have one thing in common: they’re huge potheads.

1. Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg is not only one of the most famous rappers of all time, but one of the most famous potheads of all time as well. From the beginning of his career, he has let it be known that marijuana is a substantial part of his life. In fact, cannabis is a central part of his public image.

In many respects, you could think of Snoop Dogg as America’s marijuana poster child. He smokes marijuana, he’s sold marijuana, he has a marijuana-based talk show. Not to mention, he’s one of the country’s leading marijuana entrepreneurs, funding the growth of the potent plant and selling everything from rolling papers, to bongs, and more.

At this point, it’s hard to think about weed without also thinking of Snoop Dogg.

2. The Dude

When it comes to fictionalized burnouts, there is none more beloved than The Big Lebowski’s “The Dude”. Played by Jeff Bridges, the character has become something of a cult icon, known for his laid-back cynicism, his hopeless ineptitude,  and his perpetual pot smoking.

To this day, a piece of The Dude’s personality can be found in every big-screen performance Bridges has had to offer. He’s a character that will live on in the heart and minds of stoners and burnouts for years to come.

3. Bob Marley

When it comes to pot, Bob Marley is a lot like Snoop Dogg, which is to say that he’s a musician who has slowly turned into a marijuana icon. A citizen of Jamaica and a pioneer of reggae music, Bob Marley was predisposed to smoking pot. It’s an essential part of the culture he grew up in.

As a result, Marley was a lot different from most other famous stoners. Whereas most famed potheads are hapless loons, Marley was a laid-back, but willful revolutionary. He stood for what he believed in and, as a result, has helped other stoners to stand for what they believe in as well.

4. Cheech and Chong

Marijuana has inspired its fair share of funny people, but no marijuana-inspired comedy act has ever had the impact of Cheech and Chong. Consisting of Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin, the duo set the comedy world on fire throughout the 1970s and 1980s, releasing not only an array of albums but a series of classic movies as well.

Though Cheech and Chong’s glory days have passed them by, Tommy Chong, in particular, is still very involved in the world of marijuana. One of the plant’s most vocal supporters, he sells it, smokes it, and endorses it at every turn.

5. Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High

One of the most memorable stoner characters in the history of film, Jeff Spicoli (played by Sean Penn) practically carries 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High. A blonde-haired surfer guy who lives on his whims, he arguably spawned the high school stoner archetype.

Just about everyone knew a Spicoli-type in school: lazy, chuckle-y, and so engrossed in his own hazy world that he gave no thought to social convention or responsibility.

6. Harold and Kumar

The 70s and 80s had Cheech and Chong. The 2000s had Harold and Kumar.

A stoner odd couple played by Kal Penn and John Cho, their “Go to White Castle”, “Escape from Guantanamo Bay” films are considered to be two of the best pothead movies ever released. They even threw in a 3D Christmas movie for good measure.

While they haven’t released a film since 2011, they have cemented themselves in stoner history. Their movies will live on as comedy classics for decades and decades.

7. Willie Nelson

If Snoop Dogg is rap’s resident stoner, and Bob Marley is reggae’s resident stoner, then Willie Nelson is country music’s resident stoner. The music legend has been toking up openly since the late 1960s and is renowned as one of America’s cannabis icons.

These days, Nelson is so much more than just a musician who smokes pot. He’s an entrepreneur in the cannabis industry, selling a line of cannabis products under the name “Willie’s Reserve”.

8. Scooby Doo’s Shaggy

Typically, when we think of stoner characters, we think of characters played by physical actors. However, there are a few stoner cartoon characters, one of which is, of course, Shaggy from Scooby Doo.

While the character was never explicitly shown smoking pot, his personality, tone of voice, and behaviors suggest that he did. After all, he almost constantly has the munchies.

9. Friday’s Smokey

The movie Friday revolves around marijuana, and, as such, it contains its fair share of pot-smoking characters. However, the biggest stoner of them all is easily the eccentric, small-time pot dealer, Smokey.

Played by Chris Tucker, Smoky is equal parts dumb, irresponsible, and hilarious. The movie’s primary force of action, he’s reminiscent of so many stoners we’ve all seen in our daily lives.

10. Seth Rogen

While Seth Rogen hasn’t quite built up the marijuana-centric reputation of Snoop Dogg and Willie Nelson, it’s impossible to deny his fame as a stoner. The Canadian comedy actor is frequently seen smoking marijuana in his movies, one of which (Pineapple Express) revolves around the potent plant.

Rogen represents the everyman stoner, the guy who comes home from work tired and just wants to relax with a bowl. In this way, he has helped popularized pot, making it more acceptable to those who once villainized it.
