How To Read CBD Product Labels

With an increasing trend of cannabis legalization across the states, more people are becoming cannabis enthusiasts. The growing majority of cannabis newbies tend to create a broader gap in understanding CBD labels. Consuming CBD adequately calls for the right understanding of all the components of these products.

Where do you go to learn about the components of your CBD product? Learning to understand your CBD product label is the fastest and easiest solution! However, reading and correctly understanding a CBD product can be a bit overwhelming due to all the specifications on the label—especially if you’re a newbie!

Why is that? There are several reasons, but the two most prominent include:

  1. The fact that there are hundreds, even thousands, of different cannabis strains that each has a unique set of terpenes, cannabinoids, and effects—making the CBD product labels a little complex to decipher.
  2. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) hasn’t approved any non-prescription CBD products and therefore there is no consistency on labels across all the different types of CBD brands.

It is dependent on the consumer to determine which CBD product will be safe, and the most beneficial for themselves. However, at Inyo’s Fine Cannabis Dispensary our knowledgeable budtenders can always help you to find the right product. But, it never hurts to learn how to understand what is in your product on your own as well. It may sound complex, but you can master the art of reading CBD product labels with this detailed guide.

What Are the Requirements of A CBD Product Label?

The requirements for a CBD product label vary from state to state, currently licensed via medical cannabis systems and adult-use programs. Apart from the state-licensed systems, there tend to be little or no legal regulations about CBD product labels. However, they are likely to mimic the feel and look of federal dietary product labels.

The general areas of a state-licensed CBD product label include the following:

Dosage of CBD

Knowing your correct dosage before purchasing a particular CBD product is crucial, and should be easily found on most product labels. An ideal CBD product label will tell you about the total milligrams (mg) of CBD it contains and the mg per serving, as well as the serving size, and the total number of servings the product yields.

Oil Source of CBD

Knowing where the CBD has been extracted from is also crucial for those buying cannabis products. Most CBD product labels will have this information included on the label. CBD products for both medical and recreational uses are extracted from the cannabis plants with intense flavors, aromas, and effects. They are most likely to have traces of THC, which is the main active ingredient of the cannabis plant, however, a CBD product will not cause any of the euphoric effects generated by THC products. Also, hemp-driven CBD is extracted from industrial hemp plants, which comprise a negligible amount of THC, which is usually less than 0.3%.

Apart from that, the extracted CBD could be classified into three groups: full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and CBD isolates.

They can be described as follows:

  • Full-spectrum CBD is a product that may contain multiple cannabis plant extracts like terpenes, cannabinoids, and negligible, non-psychoactive amounts of THC.
  • Broad-spectrum CBD is a product that contains a range of naturally occurring compounds like terpenes and cannabinoids from the plant, but no traces of THC.
  • CBD isolate products are those that contain only pure CBD.

An ideal CBD product label would have this information mentioned in clear fonts, and their absence could be considered a red flag. The labels that include hemp oil or hemp extracts are an indication of the fact that these products may claim medical benefits but may not contain any CBD.

What Are Significant Things to Watch Out for In A CBD Product Label?

Here’s the list of few significant things you should watch out for in a CBD product label.

  • Manufacturing Date: This is crucial information to be added to a product label. CBD-dominant flower is best when fresh, and CBD edibles and tinctures should be consumed within the months listed by the manufacturer to avoid adverse effects.
  • Batch & Lot Number: Finding batch and lot numbers on the CBD product labels is essential, for it speaks for the accountability of the products. It is mandatory to add them on a label by the medical cannabis systems and state-licensed adult-use systems.
  • License Numbers: License numbers are another mandatory item that should be included on the label per state-licensed cannabis product label. This also speaks to the accountability of a cannabis brand and helps to determine whether you’re purchasing a licensed CBD product or not.
