Cannabis and Its Effects on Hormones

As more and more states continue to legalize cannabis, its widespread usage also becomes more common. One can easily walk into a dispensary in Las Vegas and purchase from a variety of different cannabis products.

However, as the usage of cannabis increases, it becomes equally important to be aware of all the effects associated with it. While the majority of the population may be aware of the “high” that cannabis provides, very few are aware of its potential effects on hormones.

In this blog, we will be discussing the effects that cannabis has on our hormones, particularly the ones responsible for the functioning of the thyroid glands, the reproductive system, the adrenal glands, and the pituitary gland.

Understanding the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is involved in creating a sense of euphoria along with playing a role in other processes in the human body. This euphoric feeling may be generated due to in-body influences on the ECS system such as the “runner’s high” while exercising. The sense of euphoria may also be generated due to external influences such as the consumption of cannabis products. This occurs when CBD, a chemical commonly found in cannabis, interacts with the ECS.

Overall, the ECS impacts many different bodily functions such as pregnancy, appetite, memory, fertility, the immune system, and sensitivity to pain. Each different way that the ECS impacts the body is orchestrated through a collection of organs and glands known as an “axis”. For example, the ECS impacts the body via the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland, and the adrenal glands for the hypothalamus pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis.

Effects of Cannabis on the Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) Axis

The hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system is responsible for stress control in our body through the timely release of the cortisol hormone. If cortisol levels increase, this may result in weight gain, an increase in anxiety, and frequent mood swings.

According to the University of Illinois at Chicago, a cannabinoid (CBD) released in small amounts in the body may reduce stress regardless of the cortisol levels.

Effects of Cannabis on the Hypothalamus Pituitary Thyroid (HPT) Axis

The hypothalamus-pituitary thyroid (HPT) axis affects several functions in our body, including digestion, maintenance of the body’s metabolism rate, brain development, muscle control, and heart rate regulation. HPT influences body metabolism by generating the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

If TSH levels are low, a person may face issues such as abnormal menstrual cycles, weight gain, and depression. The presence of cannabinoids in the blood may balance TSH concentrations, thereby avoiding the above-mentioned problems.

Other Effects of Cannabis on Hormones

Several other hormones may also be maintained through the intake of cannabis, such as ghrelin, leptin, insulin, and glucagon. A study published in Nature showed evidence that ghrelin, the hormone responsible for hunger, may be controlled by consuming cannabis which manages appetite and decreases food intake.

When a sufficient amount of cannabis is ingested, leptin, and insulin hormone levels may also be controlled. Leptin deals with maintaining body weight, body energy levels, and food intake. Glucose, on the other hand, controls the sugar levels circulating in the bloodstream.

Cannabis is also known to possibly help women with hormonal fluctuations during menopause and puberty, times when women often experience depression, anxiety, and frequent mood swings. CBD is claimed to be effective for these problems as it may have antidepressant and anti-anxiety properties. Studies have also suggested that CBD produces vascular and muscle relaxation effects which leads to milder period cramps. The presence of THC in cannabis may also help control the maturation of the ovarian follicle in women.
